Hillary 'Danger' Clinton

The Clinton campaign stated today that Hillary "misspoke" about facing sniper fire and running for her life on an airstrip. Apparently, Hillary's memories of the actual events of the day were lost in the fog of war.

She faced danger quite often as a first lady. Bill often dispatched her as his own personal Rambo.

I unearthed this picture from one of her many missions:

Hillary Clinton is the most honest politician to ever walk the earth.

I think they should have remained straight on this issue.

Hillary's existence saves lives (2.00 / 0)

Hillary has neither the time nor the inclination to explain herself to someone who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that she provides, then questions the manner in which she provides it. She'd prefer you just said thank you and went on your way. Otherwise, she suggests that you pick up a weapon and stand a post, like her.

Very uncool... (2.00 / 1)

Show me one, just one picture of Barack Obama in a dangerous situation representing his country.

These attacks on Clinton are pathertic, given the truth of her mission to Bosnia...

Maybe she was thinking about this day at Camp Bedrock when she misspoke about something that happened 10 years ago:

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

But the highlight of her trip were visits to two fortified posts outside the U.S. base in Tuzla. Even President Clinton, restricted to the base by bad weather in January, did not see as much of this war-wracked region as Mrs. Clinton did Monday.
...
Riflemen rushed to the brush line as the helicopter landed and surrounded her as she walked into the post. Located in a "separation zone," the U.S. outpost nestles between two tree lines. Just months ago, one was Serbian territory, the other Bosnian.

Security was tight - fighter jets accompanied her C-17 cargo plane to Tuzla - but officials said the first lady took no extraordinary risks on the trip.

=
First Lady of the United States, Hillary Clinton, visited her country's troops at their fortified outposts in north-eastern Bosnia today and said their peacekeeping work was "extraordinary to behold".
Mrs Clinton's helicopter flight to Camp Alicia, home of a mechanised infantry outfit and a combat engineer batallion 15 miles east of Tuzla, took her over burned out villages and farm houses whose roofs had been blown off in the fierce fighting before last December's Paris peace agreement ended the 43 -month-old war in Bosnia.

A machine gun emplacement guarded the entrance of the outposts and marked Bosnian minefields were visible outside its perimeter.
...
After lunch with the troops in a makeshift dining hall surrounded by sandbags, she flew on to Camp Bedrock south of Tuzla to visit an army field hospital.

Mrs Clinton, who later returned to Tuzla for a show starring singer Sheryl Crow and comedian Sinbad, said she was "amazed at how much has been accomplished in such a short period of time" by US troops in Bosnia.

Talkleft: I did some research on Lexis Nexis last night

I'm amazed that she took a chopper to a forward MASH unit. Can you believe that? The First Lady of the United States. Can you imagine Laura Bush putting on a flak jacked and heading out to a forward MASH unit. What a brave and wonderful woman.

I hope the Obama folks do keep flailing at this issue. It just spotlights their lack of character and the type of leader Hillary Clinton is.

The US had made a huge commitment to bringing peace, and they decided to send Hillary and Chelsea as a symbol of our committment to peace. That's leadership. That's powerful world class leadership. I find all the nasty innuendo sad and desperate. She put herself in harms way for the cause of peace. Would any of us do the same? I doubt it, but then we are not fit to be a leaders of the free world, are we?

Re: Very uncool... (none / 0)

Media, let it go.  Even her campaign admits that she misspoke.  I really don't think this will be a big deal.  I was in the military and knew a lot of guys who "misspoke" about our dangers in a war zone, and what they won their ribbons for when they were trying to pick up girls in a bar.  Hillary is trying to pick up votes.

To be fair, they've both done some trumping up.  Here, I'll give you some fodder from the Washington Post - http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/con tent/article/2008/03/23/AR2008032301706. html - Now go drool over that, but don't forget that Clinton is mentioned embellishing as well.

Who sends their teenage daughter into a warzone...on purpose.

I agree - give it up.

There are plenty of other things you talk about...this issue is dead.

Re: Very uncool... (none / 0)

I would not put my daughter in real danger, and neither would Hillary.

I truly believe Hillary is a loving mother, so no I don't believe her story of there being sniper fire

Re: Very uncool... (none / 0)

Yes, I've posted it before. It is hard to keep up with the stream of diaries on this same topic.

Let's discuss sending Chelsea to Bosnia. Do you have kids? Have you ever been in places that are not entirely secure? I don't care how "safe" the military says they will keep them, imagine how big a decision it is to send your child into a potentially hostile location. There had just been a war there. The situation was not settled. Clearly the only child of the President of the United States is a unique target. Yet Bill and Hillary Clinton decided to that Hillary and Chelsea would trave together as a symbol of peace and this country's commitment to that reason. For me, it is a propfound testemonial to the kind of self sacrifice and commitment to the goals of this nation, that we see in these leaders.

I know it is easy to sit back in a soft chair in front of a computer screen and criticise Hillary Clinton about her comments, but it also seems to show an ignorance of the kind of people you are criticising and the things they have done for this country.

I agree (none / 0)

I liked Hillary back then much, much more because of that. I do think she exaggerated a bit, but in general I think it was brave of her to fly to Bosnia. It definitely was a good gesture.

Also, MediaFreeze, please note not that her "misspoke" admission came out, I am NOT running amok and commenting about how she lied :) .

Which take a bit effort given all the vitrol Obama received on MyDD last week about being a racist.

Maybe next time will be more civil to one another her on MyDD.

What do you think?

Re: I agree (none / 0)

I think you are right. I don't think Obama is a racist, but I do dislike the tendency of his campaign to call others racists. I don't think she lied. I think she confused two events that happened 10 years ago.

Where I expect we disagree is that I do think that Obama has a big problem with truthfulness. The two instances that I find most troubling recently are NAFTAgate where he said"It did not happen., and the Wright matter where he said he was not in the pews and then admitted he was. These are not racial issues. They are honesty issues, and they drive to character. That is what I can't get over with Obama. In business, I do not deal with people who I discover have tried to mislead me on a major matter, I hold him to that standard.

Did you even read the post? (none / 0)

Hillary visited two forward bases, on the front lines.  I'm sure Chelsea stayed back at the secure Task Force Eagle HQ in Tuzla with Sinbad and Sheryl Crow.

Re: Hillary 'Danger' Clinton (none / 0)

I've got a questio0n to those defending Hillary on this, did you laud Cheney's bravery when he put his life on the line in Iraq and Afghanistan? I mean seriously, its the same sort of thing, only Cheney actually has negotiates (ineptly, but he's a crazy douche what do you think he's going to do), and the Cheney comparison is best case for her, the evidence seems to put this more in line with Bob Hope, Al Franken and other USO types.

Re: Hillary 'Danger' Clinton (none / 0)

The real question is: did you hire a team of lawyers to pick over his account of some event that occurred 10 years ago?

That this is a subject during the campaign is beyond ridiculous.

A plane under sniper fire (none / 0)

Is not the same as a person standing on the ground "being shot at."  If snipers did fire at a plane, nobody would know unless they were hit.

In a combat zone, especially in modern combat, being "under sniper fire" is more a condition than an event.  Snipers, for example in the hills surrounding a U.S. base, will take 2-3 quick potshots, then scurry for cover before the choppers arrive and fire rockets at them.  However, until officers on the scene can become confident that the threat has been eliminated or has dissipated, the area that was taken under fire will be considered to be under the threat of sniper fire pretty much on a continuing basis.  Shorthand for that is just to say that the area is "under sniper fire."  It's a very common condition in combat zones.  It's not Condition Red Alert DANGER DANGER, but it's a condition for caution: people travelling on foot will avoid open areas and hurry through them when they can't be avoided, airplanes landing will use steep or stealthy approaches, etc., and most assuredly arriving dignitaries will take precautions.

Clinton never said she had bullets whizzing past her ears, she said they were under sniper fire while landing, which is perfectly consistent with her having been informed on the plane that the plane was "under sniper fire," which would simply mean that the plane was landing in an area that had not been called clear since the last time snipers fired on it.  Especially with a dignitary travelling like that, the rule would be to assume danger and take precautions first unless there is absolute assurance of safety.

As a civilian, I imagine her heart was racing a bit over the fairly normal precautions.  Her memory of it 10 years later is more likely to be inaccurate and exaggerated than to be accurate.
